Welcome!

In our class we will be learning English Language Arts.  This will include writing as well.  I believe in a classroom environment that fosters learning and love.  My goal everyday is for my students to feel safe and to learn.  I foster relationships to build trust and confidence in my students.

About Me:

My name is Kelly Kalen. This is my seventh year teaching. I have taught 4th, 5th and 6th grades. I received my Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University.

Class Information:

Contact

The best way to contact me is by way of email.

Mrs. Kalen: kelly.kalen@gilbertschools.net

I will check my email before and after school and will get back to you as soon as possible.

Snack

Your child may bring a snack to eat anytime in class.  Please make sure it is simple and quick to eat. Water is the only beverage allowed in the classroom (container must be see-through).

Discipline Procedures

Most discipline problems will be handled in the classroom.  If negative behaviors continue, a Think Sheet will be completed by the student and taken home for parent/guardian discussion and signature. Conferences will be scheduled for recurring difficulties and to discuss positive changes. Serious infractions will be referred to the building administrator and could lead to loss of privileges.  Please refer to the Student Handbook and feel free to contact me for additional information or if you have concerns regarding your child.

Donating

My classroom has an ongoing class wishlist on Amazon.  Here is the link: http://a.co/dUTZIvn

Homework

Generally, the homework that will be assigned is work your child was unable to finish in class.  Students will be responsible for keeping track of their assignments and classwork. Mrs. Kalen will be posting all assignments to the students Google Calendar which is available to all students and parents on Ms. Kalen's website. Completed work is expected to be turned in on the day due to receive full credit. If a child forgets their homework, it needs to be turned in the next day for partial credit. If a student is absent, two make-up days are given for each day to complete and return work for full credit.

Room Parent

I am in search of a parent/parents who would be willing to help out.  This is first come first serve. We are in search of someone who would be willing to write a weekly bulletin update, email parents with exciting school activities, setup and take down of class parties and other work around the classroom.  Please email kelly.kalen@gilbertschools.net if you’re interested.

Important contact information:

I am excited to start this journey with each and every one of your children.  I want to ensure that we have direct lines of communication, please contact me with any concern!  I think it is important to set very high standards for every student and I am sure you would agree with me.  To make certain I are consistent, I want to hear from you!

Remind 101:

I will also be using REMIND101 again this year.  It is a one-way text/email from us to your cell phone or computer.  Please text the code below to 81010 to register for our classes.  You will receive text/email reminders.  This is an amazing tool! I also invite all students who have an electronic device to also add the Remind 101 app on their device.  Remind 101 allows students to be in charge of their success by being aware of everything about the classroom.

Remind 101 codes:

Text: kalencl to 81010

I am delighted to be your child’s teacher this year and look forward to meeting you.

Best,

Mrs. Kalen
